Cctv cameras with ability to record at night & owners can view while not at home

Can anyone recommend a four or six cctv camera system with the ability to record 24/7 and have a good quality image even at night. The person who wants the cctv system also wants to be able to view what is happening at their home while they are not at home. Can anyone recommend any cctv system which would meet their requirements or is there anything they should look out for - what brands are better than others, which ones should they stay clear from, etc?

BTW this will be their first cctv system so how much should they expect to pay?

    Maplins do a starter kit for £200 - £400.

I think its an 8 channel recorder unit with 2 - 4 cameras. With the option to add more upto 8.

You can get 16 channel ones also.

Good quality images at night need lighting, Either floodlights or infra-red lighting, Depending on the distance and quality required etc..

How much to pay, Depends on how much they want to spend. You can get a 4 camera system for under £400, But the nighttime range will be limited and not brilliant quality.

Or they can spend several thousand on one camera alone.

They have decided they need six cameras.

Has anyone had a cctv system installed which they would recommend?

They have decided they want the cameras in place as soon as possible. They want to purchase the system in the next day or two. Someone they know has apparently purchased a six camera system with recording facilities, colour, night vision, leads and everything needed for £410.00.

I must get round to researching about cctv systems tomorrow.

They have also decided they want to be able to view the cctv in their living room and their bedroom - is this possible?

  • If you get an IP system you can view it anywhere over the internet, either on a tablet/phone or just by putting in the IP address on the computer. Some of these require specialist installation as there are certain things need doing to the IE on the computer just to view the pictures and updates cause problems too.

We installed a Panasonic one at a client's house, but it ran into the thousands.

Look at a basic IP one, get double the size that you currently think you need, and make sure you are capable of installing it, it is not as simple as it would seem.

Also, do not expect to be able to do this without holes in the wall and power/Cat5 cables running everywhere.

I have a wired system that you can view over the internet. Its similar to the ones they sell in Maplins. But cheaper.

Night vision usually means a few cheap infra-red LED's with limited range.

Are the camera's waterproof? Will they still be working when battered by snow and -14 degree C temperatures?

No. If I was looking for a cctv system I would say I was although I don't know what difference it makes because I am just asking for peoples opinions and experiences for a couple who want a cctv system.
