Laminate flooring thickness - quickstep impressive range

Hi

We are about to put in new flooring and are looking at the quickstep impressive range. The impressive range is about £20 sqm and the impressive ultra range is about £28 sqm. As far as I can tell the only difference is that the cheeper option is 8mm thick and the ultra version is 12mm thick. Bearing in mind we are buying 48sqm is it worth getting the ultra version. Can anyone tell me why 12mm is better or if you have used this range I'd be grateful for your thoughts. Thanks.

  • Overall thickness is less important than the wear layer. Also the expensive bits to produce are the edges, so a narrower plank will cost more than a wider one to produce. (And potentially fit)

    Quickstep is good stuff.

Personally, I'd save your money and buy the 8mm version. I've just had a look and I can't see any difference apart from the thickness of the MDF.

THe most important bit with laminate is the quality of the wood effect 'photo' and the quality of the protective wear layer. We have quickstep perspective wide flooring across the whole ground floor (about 50sq. m) and have had no issues at all with it. We did look at buying solid / engineered wood, but all the samples marked, stratched or dented so easily so we ended up going for laminate - glad we did as it's stood up to a two year old throwing toys at it very well!.
