I never heard of this crankshaft 'ring' thing. Sounds like he got the timing wrong and is waffling. Maybe he didn't use a locking kit when changing the belt and now the timing is out; sounds most likely.

Do let us know the outcome.
  • Quick update, mechanics wanted car back to take apart, were insisting they knew what was wrong (without even looking properly) and said they were having trouble getting part from peugeot, this was probably because part doesnt exist. I was told they couldnt tell me how long they would have car for or how much it would cost us.

I cancelled and took it to peugeot, it turns out it was a turbo vaccum tube had not been put back on after belt was changed. Cost £114 for an hours labour, but they valleted the car for free, so I was very happy.
  • Ask your !!!!!! of a mobile mechanic to cough up the £114 or you'll sue.

I'm pretty sure means she's happy the car is now sorted, not that the car is now clean. And that she feels, despite it being pricey, she doesn't have to worry any more about potentially being ripped off by the so called mechanic!

As for claiming the money back, difficult as they may say they never had the opportunity to take the car in as they wanted to properly investigate. But op you should certainly push for them to give you the money for sorting it out! Push hard.
