Money does not equal happiness, perhaps not having to worry about money at all, and having a purpose at the same time will help you to be happy.

Its a strange thing but we might be one of the couples you talk about and although we could go on numerous holidays we don't the thought of hours and hours at airports, jet lag etc does not appeal to us we have done it and now we have more fun sending our kids and grandkids away mainly because we love them. I must admit that our ideas on what we would do in our old age has completely turned around, everyday on the golf course did not happen, a new car every year or two, did not happen, trips here there and everywhere did not happen. We live comfortably, reasonably healthy go to the occasional funeral, spoil the grandkids and thats it. For those planning the big away trip I will always remember a close friend that booked the whole family in to disney florida bought all tickets upgraded the car and what did it did do rained every single day, it does not always work out as you planned.

    WE ARE JUST LIKE YOU.

When i was growing up my brothers used to take the mickey out of me for what they say that i was tight & it was a standing joke that i played along with, as we got older i really think they believed it was true ,what started as a joke, where they used to blow it on booze , motorbikes , fags, etc, etc, i used to pay a mortgage & didnt have a lot to spare with a small family & building & renovating the house , running old cars , i only wish i had half of the money they thought i had !!, & even to this day if i walked in a pub & the rabble are there , they would say , make way at the bar !, our joes here.
while i look back now , all of them are very well of now , some are millionaires , some are wealthy , some have top jobs on good money.
Me ok, im not without a shilling or two now & i could do most things that are on offer in the world, but as the op as said , i think i am very much like them.
My son has been today with our grandchildren & i said have you checked yor bank balance lately, he said no , & immediatley checked & said oh thanks dad , i get more joy by giving & in some cases lending the money to them & im not interested in going around the world again!, im looking forward on takeing the family 10 of us to Cornwall for our annual holidays where they will also recieve there spending money from mum & dad for there spend , now thats sheer enjoyment for us both , i seem to be getting more & more funerals to attend every week or so.

When I've recovered my misspent youth. Aiming for monthly income from investments somewhere around the £2K mark, not sure when or if that'll ever be though, so in the mean time it's scrimping and saving as usual.

These people did not own their own home, they choose to live in local authority housing, nothing wrong with that

There's plenty wrong with that. That housing is for the needy. They should !!!!!! off out of it.

In London I think a lot of that sort of thing must be going on, why pay (in their eyes) over 2k a month when you can get a bigger LA flat for just over £500 a month.

    ????????

Nobody with "at least £250K in the bank" would be eligible for a council property. Criminals would, of course, still try.

No, what happens is they are sub let which I think is illegal, or they adopt the flat from family which I think no longer is allowed most of the time. Its in the local paper all the time people getting caught.

No one is eligible for a flat in London, no point applying unless you want to wait 10 years or more hahaha:D

No one checks as far as I know how much people have in the bank when they rent a LA flat.

If I had a LA flat and won the lottery they cannot make you leave, I think Bob crow got a lot of grief as he was paid quite a bit (£145,000 per year) but stayed in his LA flat, can't remember the whole story and won't talk ill of the dead.

Besides in London the rents are going up to high prices even in LA homes and soon and I think in 10 years lots of people will be leaving London, its just too much money for a home.

They both died suddenly in their 70's, saving all their lives for nothing,

Not nothing. They had the security of never having to worry about money. Nor is spending money for the sake of it a necessity. The simple things in life are often far more rewarding.

You should watch Saints and Scroungers. The scroungers are being found, and they end up with their just deserves.

I am surprised you didn't shop those guys with the £250K in a council property. Not reporting them makes you just as guilty as they were.

Reporting them for what? they had not done anything illegal or wrong. They were the rightful tenants of the flat.
