It already had windows 8.1installed.
I put office 2010 and kaspersly on and it was fine. It then auto-installed a lorry load of Windows updates and has practically froze. Click an icon and wait about 5 minutes for something to happen.
Any suggestions?
(I had it on auto update because I have no idea which updates are really necessary.)

Do a system restore (assuming it is enabled) to before the lorry load of updates, then install them bit by bit...

Thanks. System restore point seems to be before I put everything on, although I thought I'd created an interim one, which is a bit of a pain.
Where would I find the settings to change from auto install? And why would doing it a bit at a time make a difference? Or is it to narrow down any problematic ones?

Restore to before the problem started. Installing the updates individually, or in small groups, may well identify which one introduces the problem. Then you can probably ditch it and let subsequent updates over-ride it, or at least see if MS have identified it as causing problems and released a fix for it.

To switch off automatic updates, look at:

    What make and model?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
