I am becoming a Uni student in September, yay, I have applied for a student loans accommodation etc and thats fine apart from when I went to apply for a student account at Natwest, as I thought it was really good, and got declined cuz of my default!
I have a really bad credit history and a student account would really help me out at university with that interest free overdraft etc, can anyone advise me on where to apply for a student account if you have a seriously bad credit rating? I know most of the big banks will tell you to get lost, has anyone had the same problem as me?
Please Help!

Jayindebtstudent, you will be lucky to get a bank offering you a student account. I have a poor credit rating due to some missed DD's on my account. I cant even get a debit card!! Why not pay experian or another credit reference agency (£2.00 i think) for your credit report, you will probably find that you there will be discrepencies on it which can be rectified. Plus maybe dissassociate yourself from people you dont know. Hope that helps.0

I have a student account with Halifax. It has a £500 limit. I am not sure if they will accept you though.

Don't give up. I'm 23 and only recently sorted out my finances. I'm free from debt now, but I don't have a good credit rating from a load of missed payments on credit cards from the last 3/4 years. To my surprise, Lloyds TSB gave me a student account, so you might want to give them a try?0

give up trying to get a student account as i have bad credit rating and i have been told by natwest, abbey, Lloyds tsb and rbs that i wont get it so have to stay with a current account.0

Sadly, it's unlikely you'll get a student account/overdraft in the current economic climate if you have a poor credit history or none at all. On the plus side, if you explain this situation to the finance office at your Uni, it may up your chances of being given some money from the discretionary (hardship) fund, which will work out better in the long run as unlike an overdraft, you won't need to pay it back.
Good luck.Come ride with me, through the veins of history...

I had to wait until my defaults dropped off my credit file before I could get a student account.
My advice is to run your current account well and when your credit file is better they may change it to a student account.0
