small kitchen budget refurb/rebuild

Hello All

I need to change the kitchen in my parents house and would appreciate some advice of where to start and look for a budget makeover

Budget is quite tight so I'm not after a fancy kitchen, simplicity and functionality will do, currently the floor uses a lino type material, am happy to change it for something similar rather than tiles to keep cost down.

Someone suggested keeping the skeleton of the units but they are over 20 years old so i think its best to change them.
I assume main costs are the units, cooker+extractor then hiring someone to fit them. anything else I am missing?

to get an idea of budget I would like to keep the total costs within £5k or less if possible

Ebay if you want to do the work yourself, Magnet trade do an all in package.

Shop around and look for sales.

IKEA are a good source at relatively low cost.

Can you DIY some/all of the work?

AdrianC - my diy skills are not great tbh

Im accepting the fact will need to hire someone to fit everything but if I can find discounted units then at least that could help to lower the overall cost etc. will check magnet and ikea , thanks guys
  • It might be worth finding a fitter on Checkatrade, they will be able to buy stuff at 'trade' and have access to all the other trades. Get as many quotes as you can and check their feedback. Many will put a 'package' together for you I am sure.

Don't buy flat pack units, they cost less but if you are paying a professional to put them together you won't win!

Am I a bit out of touch? I would have thought £5k would be quite a healthy budget for getting a reasonably nice kitchen supplied and fitted, and if they're wanting a bog standard functional, no frills one it could be had for quite a bit less?

If you're hiring, talk to the guy who'll be doing the work before buying - he may prefer certain sources (or, more likely, have negative feelings about some), and may well be able to get you a discount.
  • without seeing its hard to advise, I managed to update my small kitchen by just changing all the doors, the tap on the sink and a bit of tile paint....

Im hoping this will be the case. its not in great condition guys, the main surfaces and especially around the cooker are covered in stubborn grease, some of which has been there a while. we had someone do work on the kitchen over 10 years back..was a bit shoddy in places but did the job. The kitchen is a fairly small box one so that should help keep costs down too....I think the units could be sourced for less than 1k if I find a good deal

I bought some basic, but solid units from Howden's last week for less than the price of a screw-it-together-yerself alternative from one of the sheds.
