My biggest worry is it burning dry and setting my house on fire ! Aren't I leaving it to cook all day when I'm out? If you just put breasts in then how does that work. Do you put water or some type of liquid in to stop it burning dry or do I just not know what I'm talking about lol!

    I worry the same!

The recipe I read about the chicken breasts said no liquid... I've found that because the lid stays on, a lot of moisture stays in the slow cooker and so food doesn't dry out as much.

I do sometimes wish I had a fancier slow cooker that you could time to do 'high' for 4 hours say, and then 'low' for 2 - not sure if such a thing exists??

I usually use the slow cooker at weekends for that reason, as I am out of the house for 12 hours during the week.

Not sure if that function exists, but our Crockpot has a 'keep warm' function, so once it's cooked on high or low for it's specified time, it keeps it warm until it's switched off-helpful if you are later home than planned! This is ours:

Thank you, will have a look.

I bought a very basic one just to try it out, and I do like it - but the limited functions put me off. I don't want food to cook on high for 12 hours, but neither do I want food to be cooking on 'low' as I fear it won't be cooked right through.

12 hrs on low should cook anything through. My dinner yesterday was lamb shoulder and neck done in water with 4 lemon wedges and some cloves of garlic . After about 6 hrs I took the meat off the bones and put it in the oven with a parsnip ,carrots and onion chopped up with the stock thickened and sliced potatoe on top for a hotpot . It was yummy

I cook everything for at least 8 hours on Low. Never had anything that hasn't been cooked.

Thanks both, that's good to know. May try to use it more on work days if I can use the 'low' function. Thanks :)

Working all day, I'll quite often do the prep in the evening and cook a casserole overnight. It's a great feeling knowing that all I have to do in the evening is cook some crusty rolls and zap the stew in the microwave.

Similarly on a weekend, get it all in the slow cooker by mid morning, and the rest of the day = no cooking.

Also works well for staggered meal times.
  • This is my favourite, & in my opinion, the best way to cook gammon or ham in the slow cooker, you will be amazed at how easy & how good it is

My SC has low, med and high settings (only because the SC was in the sale ;) ) I am still experimenting with it but when I have put things on high they just seem to take less hours than slow, not the same as high in the oven ie they don't burn or dry out.

I always used to brown meat off but it made me hate the slow cooker as I then dirtied another pan, plus the slow cooker.

I tried a couple of recipes putting the meat in raw, and well, I haven't died LOL so that would be my tip - don't be frightened about cooking things from raw.

When I got a new SC just before Christmas I replaced our old tiny crock pot one which had a ceramic pot with a Morphy Richards 'sear and stew' where you can brown meat in the pot on the hob and then just transfer the pot to the SC. I've seen them on offer a lot recently.

I've still not tried much in my SC but plan to get experimenting now we have to stretch money even further and get more serious about using it whilst I'm at work
