You didn't need to order a Recovery Disc.

No they didn't did they, they really should take it to a local reputable professional as this could end in tears.

    :wall:

They need a new HDD, I never trust a bad sector HDD. If it's under warranty I always RMA them.

None of that presents a problem.

Your advice is all over the place. First you suggest that their data won't be salvageable without expensive equipment and then you say that they can just put it in another machine.
Why not suggest they put it in another machine or a caddy in the first place?
As to the re-installation of the OS....it is no issue.

For us it's no issue. Do they know how to change boot order when putting the disk in another machine ? My advice first was to take it to a professional as a lot can go wrong here for the non tech savvy and the data on the may be unrecoverable depending on the level of damage and may require expensive data recovery techniques if there is data that is precious to them. The last thing you ever do is run CHKDSK before getting the data off, I've seen CHKDSK trash a perfectly readable disk with my own eyes.

I ordered this one as it claims to save all the data as well as to restore Windows. I haven't posted a link as my name appears on the Amazon page.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit Recovery Repair Restore plus Drivers Pack DVD No Internet Required Disc by ZEGA Digital

The problem is even if we try to create a recovery disc, I have to get it to her. As you must know she can't do anything on the laptop and doesn't know anyone who can help. She can't afford to take the laptop to a professional at the moment. Thank you for all your concern. Its really very nice of you. I hope this works! If it doesn't I will look at the advice and links on this page again.

What would you suggest? Please keep in mind that she has no access to another computer apart from her Iphone.

If you can, cancel that order from Amazon before it's dispatched. It will not help you

Seems it has already gone but it was only £7.99. I might try to buy a recovery disc from the Lenovo link you posted.

Don't spend your way of this yet, check to see if there are a set of recovery disk with the laptop first.
