Money for school trip problems.

We wanted our daughter to go on a school trip the price was £550 paid over 5 months however my job is now at risk so we cannot afford to send her.
We have already paid £50 deposit and an installment of £100.
My question is can we get any of the money back, we have contacted the school and they have said we will only get the £100 back if they fill the place with someone else. Are they entitled to do this? Thanks

If they fill the place with somebody else, I can't see why they shouldn't be able to give the whole amount back. How are they travelling? I guess if they are flying there might be a fee to change the name but apart from that, I can't see where any money is lost.

If they can't fill it, then I can understand that there could be costs incurred that they can't cover any other way than retaining the deposit.

There will probably be admin incurred by the school in the name change and I wouldn't be surprised to find that the school also has to submit a list of attendees names to their insurers so that cover can be provided, something that might also involve a cost to change.
