We wanted our daughter to go on a school trip the price was £550 paid over 5 months however my job is now at risk so we cannot afford to send her.
We have already paid £50 deposit and an installment of £100.
My question is can we get any of the money back, we have contacted the school and they have said we will only get the £100 back if they fill the place with someone else. Are they entitled to do this? Thanks

probably, where are they going?
Some costs may have already been incurred0 -
If they fill the place with somebody else, I can't see why they shouldn't be able to give the whole amount back. How are they travelling? I guess if they are flying there might be a fee to change the name but apart from that, I can't see where any money is lost.
If they can't fill it, then I can understand that there could be costs incurred that they can't cover any other way than retaining the deposit.0 -
They are going to France bus and ferry.

There will probably be admin incurred by the school in the name change and I wouldn't be surprised to find that the school also has to submit a list of attendees names to their insurers so that cover can be provided, something that might also involve a cost to change.0
