There are already hundreds of names listed on these forums going back several years.

For example here is a list posted back in 2008.

Will all these posts now have to be deleted?

That's in IWIWIW so should go when that sub-board is deleted.

As someone else mentioned above, there should be no issue of naming names from Facebook, if we give the company name- that's in the public domain, list the prize and the link to the page or individual post.

Then anyone who has entered that competition can check it.

It's not ideal, but MSE can't complain it's breaking the rules...

Surely, if someone on here finds a competition winner's name on either Facebook, twitter, the radio or on a website then that name is in the public domain (otherwise how would said person see the winner's name in the first place) so why is there an issue reposting it here?

    I really don't understand.

Must confess I am not impressed with the way "legal" think.

Currently in the middle of a house sale and buying another.
Three "legals" (solicitors) involved, one for my buyer, one for myself, and one for the seller. They all seem to be waiting for each other and no proactivity or commonsense.
For example, we are all desperate to reach exchange stage, then after three months, then buyer's legal decides he wants a copy of the planning permission on the extension of my own house.I have to get a copy of it and send it to them. The fact that this information is easily found on our local government website under planning permission showing every thing was passed without any issues doesnt seem to make any difference to them. Why didn't they ask earlier, why didnt they access the web if there was a concern etc.
Commonsense doesn't seem to be in a "legals" vocabulary.
I'm surprised they havent mentioned human rights with regard to FB winners list ..
    thanks to all posters

It just doesn't make sense, It's like political correctness gone mad ... or the health and safety tw@ts basically stopping you doing anything 'cause everyone's worried about sued.

The whole premise of this whole website and forum was based on people sharing their information to a certain extent. I could go visit the other forums in here and find out where someone lives, probably their name, who they bank with, who they have a loan with, who they have credit cards with, who their energy provider is, who insures their car, where they go shopping etc etc just by finding a user with a "name" as a forum handle and then clicking "Find all by posts by" ... will give me a wealth of information about that person. So lets just shuit down the whole forum to be on the safe side.

It doesn't matter that JoeyM from Richmond just got a PPI refund of £6000 from Natwest which he is going to use to buy a new car and pay off his Yorkshire Bank Credit Card ( the fictional Joey M from Richmond wouldn't be that hard to find on FB, espcially if his profile pic was the same as his forum pic, so we should probably ban them too, this is a made up story by the way, not based on any users or usernames :) ), so ... we better not post that winning Fish Slice in the compers forum in case someone decides to look the user up on Facebook and try and find them to mug them of it.

Some names are so common that it would be impossible to identify an individual winner from their name just being mentioned in a post on here.

As anyone who likes or follows a company/organisation or group on Facebook is technically allowing their interest to be seen, because the companies setting is public, so announcements of winners names are then public, and will be picked up by Google when it does it's trawl to update search results.

How much more in the public domain can you get than that!

I have a really rare name and still I have no objection to it being posted up here or virtually anywhere on tinterweb. If its posted here ( its not I have looked) then I don't have to admit that its me, iyswim. I.e post Jane bloggs wins ITV.
Oh here I am Jane bloggs ta very much for posting up. I just would not admit to being Jane bloggs.
I would prefer to know I had won something by whatever means then never know and miss out.

Martin's weekly newsletter often encourages members to check out the competition area of the forums and enter competitions, proudly stating prizes that have been won by members.

Yet the forum is becoming much less user-friendly. Not being allowed to display a winners' name list and no longer being able to move more than 4 pages at a time, are both backward steps, making the forum less easy to use.

Your very luck I have a common name according to another forum member, who should not be named *cough* Sax *cough* and I should call myself Amanda not my common name :p

Back on topic, we copy pictures from the internet to here, we copy photos from the internet to here, we copy stories from the internet to here, we copy competition from the internet to here, these are all from public places and have all been seen by thousands of people before we get our hands on them.

So why can we not post our comping friends names on here to let them know they have won a competition, surely that will also be copied from a site that is in the public domain and already seen by thousands before us?
