Am thinking of joining British Gas 's Boiler Care scheme ( quoted £11-50 per month), after receiving a phone call the other day and looking at it online.

Only problem is my boiler is playing up the moment ie switching off occasionally but sometimes working fine for days.

Should my boiler be in perfect condition before I join the scheme ?

Had an annual boiler service in October 2014 and all was ok.

Would anybody recommend the boiler care scheme from British Gas ?

Thanks

They would usually do an initial inspection to check everything is working to avoid people claiming for pre-existing problems.

It all comes down to if you want to pay a £132 - £600 per year just in case it breaks. An alternative is to open a savings account titled "boiler care" and put £20 (or whatever amount you wish) into it each month.

You then have your own repair fund. If it does not break down, you eventually have a fund for a new boiler!

The downside to this is you have a period at the beginning where you do not have much funds to cover repair. Also, the temptation to dip into it.

I found with british gas, after having them for a while, rather than servicing the boiler, they looked for reasons why it was unsafe in an attempt to get me to replace it. Needless to say I cancelled my Homecare.

Check what the boiler care covers.

I've had boiler care for years. They do an annual service and I have had two central heating pump replacements.

And recently the hot water cylinder sprang a leak and they fixed it - no charge. I don't know what it would have cost if I'd had to pay.

Whether it would have worked out cheaper over all those years to pay for repairs as needed I don't know.

But check what your deal would cover.
