Ordered a tumble dryer from 365, received a text from them stating item wouldn't be in stock for two weeks - annoyed

Called appliance city, they didn't have one either, but had another one, which was available for delivery tomorrow - pleased

365 electrical gave an immediate refund - praise

Found same dryer at gas superstore at £100 + 5% off with voucher.

Called appliance store to cancel tomorrow's delivery, took three calls and they want a £40 cancellation charge! - vent!

Can they do this?

I can't comment on if it is legal for them to do this, but I suspect possibly not. What do their T&Cs say - do you have a link to them ?
However, this is a prime example of why you should look *everywhere* for the lowest price *before* purchase, and then stop looking afterwards.
  • T's & C's say about cancelling after delivery and charging £40 to collect, but it is 'on a lorry in London' so they are charging. Distance selling act, cooling off period etc.

    Still saved over £85 though.

QFT. Why do people feel compelled to keep looking once they've purchased?

Because companies offer a thing called 'price matching'. I called appliance store and gave them a chance to match. They couldn't.

    HTH.
