New line wanted, but not from BT

I'm moving into a new flat for 6 months and want to get broadband.

It's not in a cable area, so I'm going to need a phone line in order to get ADSL

The previous tenant had a BT line that is no longer active.

Is my only choice to sign up for a new 12 month minimum term BT contract?

I spoke to someone at Toucan (who offer monthly line rental) who said they can only take over an existing BT line, not an inactive one.

It's particularly annoying to have to pay for 12 months phone line rental when I don't even want to use the phone :(

I signed up with madasafish, got my line reconnected for free and its a rolling 28 day contract.

They are now owned by BT.;)

They block access to the likes of 18185/1899.

They charge for caller display. Unlike BT,s virtually free service.

You can only transfer your line to BT or a couple of other suppliers.

Not a problem for me, i hardly use the phone so not fussed about caller display, it was only so i could get adsl. The only reason i went with them is no other company would reconnect the phone, which they did for free :)

Yes they are owned by BT but they are not BT, they are still their own company for now.

  • YES!! ARGH, BT make me SOOOO angry. I want to follow Martin's advice and get Talk Talk with Broadband, but BT seem to have a monopoly setting up lines! And they want to lock me into a contract!

I've just moved into a new home (finally on the ladder!) and the line was 'Ceased' having not been used for years.

I called BT - waited 25 minutes fro them to answer - then the said it would cost £125 to connect the line again! When I asked why, she said she could connect me to complaints if I liked. She kept on quoting that price, when I question ed her about what could have ceased the line. What a joke! It's probably their fault its disconnected, if BT used my line for another house.

I called back - waited another 25-30 minutes in a que ("I'm sorry, but we're extremely busy at the moment" is the message regardless of when you call during the day!) and after being put through to the wrong person (and waiting again in a que) they said they'd only charge me if the wiring in my house was the issue. Argh, same issue, 2 answers.

They missed the appointment, and failed to call. When I called them they said the person had told me the wrong day. No real apology that my wife had taken the day off.

The bottom line is - I want Talk Talk - but I have to use the monopolising, smug and ineffiencient BT to get one. BT also said there was NO cooling off period - once I was connected I would be locked into a 12 month contract! That can't be right?

All I want to do is use a different provider to BT - but they seem to hold all the aces! Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh

    Can anyone help?

Not so. Talk Talk (and any of the other providers now in the business) could do it - but they won't (see HERE).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • does anyone know whether you can use sky broadband (llu) on a madasafish line rental service.

Not used Talk Talk myself but BT are not that bad.

It's just the Indian call centres and not listening to the customer that they break down on.

Had new phone book last year that's for my area but totally useless as I live right on the boundary of another area just a matter of a few 100 yards away and the Town centre 5 miles away our phone book area title is 10 miles away.

    Guess what area we use?

Yes the one we are not in but close to, can I get a phone book for that area not a hope in hell unless I want to pay for it.

So last year I asked them to stop sending me one, guess what got another today and on the list I am a VIP, phoned up BT to complain again, went around India 5 times got Scotland then was passed to what I assume was England who said I would now be off the list.

If I get a book next year Bens getting an Email.
