Chromebook: can't stream Netflix!

I posted a few days ago with questions about whether to buy a Chromebook. Anyway - I did. Am on it now. First problem (hope it's just a teething problem...) is that Netflix won't run. When I click 'play' on any programme, I get a screen telling me that:

"To watch instantly, you'll need a computer that meets the following minimum requirements:

Windows
Windows Vista or Windows 7
Internet Explorer 8 or higher, or the latest version of Firefox, or the latest version of Chrome
1.2 GHz processor
512 MB RAM
Mac
An Intel-based Mac with OS 10.4.11 or later
Safari 4 or higher, or the latest version of Firefox, or the latest version of Chrome
1 GB RAM
Chrome OS
A Google Chromebook or Chromebox running Chrome OS 29 or higher"

As I mentioned in my last post, I am far from tech-savvy, but am sure this machine has the necessary requirements. I can't find any information about whether the Chrome OS is 29 or higher though. Is it likely to be? If that sounds like a daft question, do excuse my ignorance!

Thanks in advance!

It may help to post the model you have so people can check the specs.

I thought Chromebooks checked automatically for updates but is there a any option called SETTINGS and ABOUT in that settings area to tell you what version of ChromeOS you are running?
It maybe it needs a Full reboot (not a hibernate) to restart the OS and update further.

Its entirely possible Samsung has not released or approved an update yet if the OS is like Android, in that it goes from Google to the makers to implement, but that's a guess.
  • When you switched on your Chromebook for the first time, it should have automatically updated your OS as there is always a fair time that the unit has been lying in the box from time it leaves the factory to when you switch it on.

If you have not updated, you need to do that as per the previous post. If unsure, Google "Chromebook powerwash" (factory reset), and follow the instructions..that should let you update if required.

Another thing that may have prevented you updating the Chromebook in the first place is that it may not have connected to the internet despite showing the wifi icon on the screen.

I had this problem with mine, and traced the fault to my wifi router, which was a BT Infinity Home Hub 5 which is dual band, ie 2.4 and 5GhZ (wifi wavelengths). Sometimes the Chromebook gets confused with the 2 bands (although it works with both) and prevents itself fron accessing the internet.

If this is the case and you have one of these dual band routers, you must separate the bands so they show seperately in your settings. If you think this is the case, get back to me and I will tell you how to get round this.

Thanks for your replies, they're much appreciated.

I've managed to get Netflix working now - I did a bit of searching online and read something about changing a channel to 'beta': did that and it worked. At least, I presume that's what worked...

In the 'About Chrome' section, it tells me that it's version 40. I'm learning on the job here.

No doubt I'll have other issues at some point...something to look forward to....

Again, your replies are appreciated

I just tried it on my Chromebook for the first time and I have no issues.

Glad to hear you got it sorted.
