Funny. How old's the laptop and how long does the battery hold charge for if running on battery alone?
May be tempting fate; shutdown. Unplug power, take battery out. Use it mains only - does it start ok or same problem (take care you don't lose any data if on mains only!)

    Twenty guesses?

    is it under warranty?

Tried it with the battery removed?

Since it wont even boot up, and needs to be started twice, I would think it is electronic, something like a duff capacitor? Could be new laptop time, but why not post make and the model, just to see if and body out there has had this, and a possible?

I would say its a faulty connection between the battery and the computer - my past laptop wasn't attached properly due to wear and tear! Along with that if you always leave your battery charged and plugged in it will completely destroy your battery life!

Make and model of Laptop ? If it's one of those AMD based HP/Compaq laptops then it could be a chip balling issue as they fail for fun.

Thanks for all the replies I am guilty of leaving it on charge for long periods, the make/model is Fujitsu lifebook A series AH530 about 3 years old, it lasts about 2 to3 hours with no lead connected I will try later with battery out and connect the cable to see what happens, touchwood it has been OK all today with or without cable attached. Once again thanks all for the input.

Same thing with my Toshiba laptop, starts ok when mains connected but you have to keep the start button pressed when on battery power.
