YouTube Playback Settings

My Dell Windows 7 workstation with a 1920 x 1200 screen is perfectly capable of displaying HD 1080 video clips in YouTube and my internet connection is fast enough to prevent buffering at 1080p.
Why then is it that whenever I access a Youtube clip which has 1080p or 720p available, it always automatically starts in a lower definition like 480p. I have to manually change the setting to 1080p every time, wind the clip back to the start and start playing it afresh.
This is driving me crazy! Is there a setting somewhere I've missed that can force YouTube to default to 1080p playback whenever it's available?

If you have GreaseMonkey (Firefox add-on), you can install the "YouTube Auto Buffer & Auto HD" script. With that, you can set the default resolution, set videos to automatically pause at the beginning, and disable DASH playback (so the whole video loads into buffer, instead of just the next segment).

Alternatively, you could use the YouTube HD add-on. The only downside is that you can't disable DASH playback with it:

Or just search Mozilla's site for other add-ons -- there are plenty to try.0 -

OK and thanks for trying to be helpful but I forgot to mention that I am a dedicated IE user... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0
