Memory foam mattress

We need a new mattress. I think I want a memory foam one, having slept on one a few times- unless anyone can tell me why it's a bad idea.

So, which one- recommendations please. Cost is an issue, but I want quality and value rather than cheap, I will be spending a third of the next 7 - 10 years on it!

The slats themselves are about 3 inches and they are 3.5 to 4 inches apart. Does it make a difference?

If going for a pocket sprung mattress then yes slat gap will make a difference to how long the mattress will last.

A 3.5 to 4 inch gap is quite large. The mattress will have no support in the gaps and will sink into the space and reduce it's lifespan.

Can you either get some board and put over the top to make a solid base or buy a length of wood and put in a few more slats to reduce the gaps. That's assuming the slats are a solid kind. If they are sprung there is very little you can do.

An all foam memory foam mattress will feel dead, bit like sinking into wet sand. They can also be quite warm.

A springs and foam mattress will feel like a normal mattress with bounce and life.

I have a memory foam mattress on a bed with metal rods rather than wooden slats, so quite narrow and a big gap between them, hasn't affected the mattress at all.


The memory layer is the bit that has worn out first, the areas where I sleep don't have the same memory effect and feels more like soft normal foam.


It is warmer than a conventional mattress, it can be hard to get the room temperature and duvet weight correct.


Its still very comfortable though.

I've got a Slumberland gold seal divan and mattress. It is the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. There is a separate latex top attached to the main mattress.

The memory foam won't have worn out, it'll be the foam UNDER the memory foam topping that's gone. As that's a cheaper type of foam. Memory foam is in fact quite a hard wearing substance, but it does also comes in different qualities.

As for the gaps, yes it'll have a long term effect on the mattress.

My 15 years experience in the trade and looking at complaints tells me that.

I can definitely add more slats, it's not a sprung base. I'll look in to that first.

Personally I don't like memory foam. Mainly because it is a bit freaky/claustrophobic when you climb into bed and settle into the permanent indentation you eventually make in the foam. We now have a natural latex topper (about 4 inch deep) which I find very comfortable.
