Can I change my mind about how I send a sold item??

I listed a bookset at the minimum price I would be happy for it to sell for (the amount I paid for it) and put what I thought was the right postage as I had sold something similiar a few years ago. I also had a look at similiar items that were selling and my postage was about the same as theirs. Unfortunately I have gone to the post office this morning and to send it via Royal Mail 48hr it will cost me nearly 3x the amount I quoted. I have looked at the other similiar listings and they haven't quoted Royal Mail but different couriers. I know I am at fault and I should have stated 'courier' not Royal Mail :(

Where do I stand with this? Can I cancel the sale because of this? Can I send via a different courier or not?

You could cancel the sale, but the buyer may leave you negative feedback.

You could change to a courier, but this might also leave you open to negative feedback if it makes more hassle for the buyer - eg if they have to go to a depot to collect it rather than local delivery office if they're not in.

Your problem - it's perfectly possible to cost the postage correctly before you list it.
  • Just send the buyer a message asking them if they mind you sending by courier. A lot of buyers won't care but some would, you won't know until you ask.
  • Many people, if you mention courier, the reaction is "oh no" because of this and that they "read on internet". But when they actually get the item two days later in perfect condition, they don't bat an eyelid.

Personally if I buy an item to be sent via courier I get it delivered to work rather than home, so it isn't left with a neighbour or behind my bins / under my doormat / in a bush - definitely think it's worth checking. I'd be a bit annoyed if it happened to me.

If I were you I would get in touch with the buyer and ask if they mind the bookset being sent by courier. Most buyers are reasonable and if you explain that you got it totally wrong they will probably be more understanding.

How much did you quote? How much is the weight?

Last year I sold some childrens soft toys quoting £2.80 postage I nearly had kittens when the Post Office tried to charge me nearly £9. With a little bit of effort and using my local Post Office between us the toys were squashed into a smaller box and went for the £2.80 I had charged.
