Approached by a Company

Hi,

This is quite new to me but I've been approached by a company regarding a vacancy in their firm. I didn't apply for the role and indeed I have not been applying to a any firm. Following an initial telephone conversation with the company's HR department I've now had two telephone conversations one with the senior Manager of the firm and one with the departmental Manager who is joining the company in March.

This is all quite new to me but I was wondering how these things work, how I should play this and what is likely to happen next? The job sounds great and it's with a very established company who are setting up a new team within the business.

I would imagine a face to face meeting would be next.

Yes they've just called and invited me to meet the senior Manager who is flying into the country to talk to me, he is the individual I spoke to previously on the phone. The company advised that the meeting would be a good opportunity to see the offices and get a feel for the company.

This is all very new to me.

  • How did they find out about you?

They came across my details online, they've obviously done their research quite well as much of what I do ties into the new role with a flavour of new challenges making it more enticing.
  • Did you add your CV to a jobsite ? In which case this is where they found you. Otherwise it was through Linkedin or just general web browsing looking through competitors, similar skills. This works like any job interview process - i.e. go through the motions and then if they put an offer on the table you can decide if you want to jump ship or stay.

LinkedIn had a number of anonymous visitors, the last time I was on a job website was 2012, could have been from there I guess?

Always worth an extended bit of research of the company and the people.

And trying to find out how they found you,
Networking is important part of job hunting and recruitment these days
Maybe there are people you worked with before(your company or others) that know you.

Whats the situation at your own place.
If you were not looking then presumbably reasonably happy

One thing to consider allthough very rare is the bait traps.

They come in two main forms, one is to get you to leave your current place and the new job disapears.

The other is they know they have skills gaps for a new venture and the reality is the jobs are fixed term the plan being to have their own people.
less of a risk if this is a expansion and new stuff for you.

I spoke again with the HR person who initially contacted me, the company got my details from a job site that I was last on in 2013.

The company itself is legitimate and the person who contract me has got a good track record.
