Advice on laying a carpet runner

Hi,
I want to lay some carpet on our stairs as a runner. OH is going to do it, but he's never layed carpet on stairs before. He also reckons it will look bad to turn the edges of the carpet in.
I'm really hoping someone can give me some advice on the best thing to do - pay someone to fit it?
pay to get it edged?:(
give in and let him carpet the full width of the stair?
also, advice on the best way for him to go about it would be most appreciated:D

I don't know if you can just turn under the carpet on the edges on the stairs, but we paid £1 a metre to have carpet whipped (?sp?) or edged. It might make a neater finish?0

Yeah, it's something we've considered. Might be the best thing in the long run.
thanks

Are you going to use rods for your runner? It's a tricky job to lay a runner straight! I'd suggest you get a pro in which will save you a lot of angst!!I'm mad!!!! :rotfl::jand celebrating everyday every year!!!0
