Extreme dog smell in house

I've just bought a house that was let to tenants from hell with large dogs and possibly even more pets. The house frankly stinks, I obviously new that when I bought it but I have no idea how to get rid of the smell. I cannot describe the smell and it is hard to see how these people even lived there. The scumbags certainly didn't clean for years, or pay any bills but that's another story.

We have ripped up the carpets which has reduced the smell somewhat but it's still stinks. I've scrubbed the floorboards with bleach then flash, scrubbed the walls and ceilings too. There is a particular area on the bottom few stairs where the smell is extreme.

I've read a little about pet odour cleaners but want something not for the odd pet accident, but something to treat all of the floors in the house with. Does anyone have any recommendations?

i cannot move into the house as it stands, I'm hoping painting the walls will help get rid of the smell also. Does anyone have any advice?

You can get specialist enzyme-based cleaners from petshops that break down the urine residues that cause the pong.

You may have to call in specialist cleaners if it's soaked through the floorboards.
  • Have you tried a biological washing powder as this will break down the enzymes in the urine.

If it has got into the wooden floorboard it will be difficult to remove
  • If the floorboards are that bad, it might be simpler to just replace the floorboards? Not all of them, just the really bad ones.

Other thoughts - odour neutraliser type sprays (rather than ones that just smell nice), and good old fashioned fresh air. I know it's cold, but try opening all the doors and windows for as long as you can stand it!!

  • You can get bulk quantities of industrial urine odour neutraliser from janitorial supply companies

If it was me I'd throw open all the doors and windows when I was there and get the floorboards ripped up and replaced. Urine seeps right in and I honestly don't think you'll ever get ride of the stink.

Someone in our village bought a house SO cheaply because the previous owners bred dogs in it. They had about 16 German Shepherds in there and it got so bad that the whole upstairs was rotten and also the staircase. It was all bare floorboards. I know all this from the RSPCA report! It stank so much that most people couldn't go beyond the front door.
