Another tablet request

Hi Folks,

I Have looked carefully at all the other threads on tablets here and have come to the conclusion that if people specify their needs they stand a much better chance of getting the particular advice they need.

So here goes: I have an ipod touch: a great little device but too small for any serious work. I also have an Ipad 3. Much better, but too heavy to lug around outdoors where I most need it.

I am now looking for a tablet in the middle range size, easy to carry around. I would be using it mainly for the following reasons.

Surfing the net/email/online shopping and etc
e-Reader
Playing games like scrabble that I can install via a pen drive

I suppose that means an Android tablet which I have no experience of so I will need to do the learning curve.

I would like a fairly good spec (cpu/memory/visual display).

I could probably manage up to about £200 after I sell the ipad 3.

Would be grateful if anyone here could point me in the right direction. There is a bewildering choice out there.

  • You have the ipad and it suits you ? after selling it get an ipad mini, either a mini1 or 2, my wife has an ipad mini2 and loves it, easy to use etc
  • Well it looks like a choice between the Ipad mini 2 or the Google Nexus 7.

The Nexus is about £90 cheaper and also android, which I am curious to investigate.

I thought I would be able to transfer my games (Scrabble, Hearts, Trivial Pursuits and etc) from my desktop computer onto the android but now I am not so sure. Looks like I will have to go to the Android store.

Still cannot make my mind up but the Nexus looks good for surfing and has a decent spec.

You could also consider Windows tablets too. I haven't got one myself, but have played around with some belonging to friends and family, and been quite impressed.

Just slightly over budget, but gets good reviews.

  • If you want a low cost introduction to android tablets you could do a lot worse than the Asus MemoPad 7". Just bought one for my son at £89, for the price the performance, build, and display quality are outstanding.

Thanks for replies. I had not thought about a windows tablet. Will definitely investigate that avenue. I am presuming that it would be possible to install current windows desktop programs on to that tablet. It says that the Operating system is Windows 8.1 where as I am still running Windows XP. I need to do some research there.

The Asus Memo Pad 7 also looks good. My local Currys has it on offer for £99.99.
Lots to bite at there and thanks once again for very helpful replies.
  • If you are still looking, Groupon have a deal on with refurbished ipad mini (several versions) from £159.99.
