Couriers damaged item durning transit

Hi,
I'm a small business owner and I've used myparceldelivery.com to send some furniture I made. The item was sent with UPS.
My customer took delivery only to find out that the item was damaged.
The item is an Oak display unit, quite heavy but and damaged could only be caused by a drop.
I reported this to myparceldelivery.com who passed this on to UPS. They collected the item for inspection, I was told that the packaging was inadequate and that the claim for damage was unsuccessful.
I'm not sure what to do next. The damage could only be caused by a drop and I'm not sure what other packaging would of prevented any damage.
Any help would be great
Cheers
Steve

I don't think you'll be able to do anything. As a business, most consumer rights won't apply to you, and agreements you enter into will be binding.
From myparceldelivery's site, furniture is listed as a restricted item, which is defined as: "You CAN send these items through any courier who you book with My Parcel Delivery however this will be on a no compensation basis. If they are lost or damaged in transit you will be unable to make a claim for compensation."

This would be the worrying part of any claim:fentigerfurniture wrote: »The damage could only be caused by a drop and I'm not sure what other packaging would of prevented any damage.
What packaging did you use?
What was the damaging to the packaging? And the item?
You inevitably cannot package something to survive ANYTHING but your average drop from the back of a van for a piece of wood should be ok with thick enough cardboard, polystyrene to create a gap between box and contents plus some form of wrapper/ cover over it.0 -
Hi,
Thank you for your replies.
The item is an Oak cube display unit.
About 5 of the joints have been damaged and cracked open.
This isn't slight damage where it has just taken a knock.
No visible damage to the packaging.
I used bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard from a roll then cardboard box, fragile tape
Cheers

I don't think you have a hope.
Next time use a delivery company rather than a courier company, they are more used to looking after parcels of furniture.
If you need any recommending I would be glad to.0 -

UPS denied damaging this customers items, they were somewhat embarrassed when the homeowner released his cctv image and it went viral..

It would need to be double or triple boxed with padding material between each layer to have been covered.
You might be better off using a specialist packing firm if you are going to send this sort of thing regularily.
Additionally, I know you're a small business, but you only used a middleman because they were cheap.
If you go direct with the couriers such as UPS they would cover you more widely - you/'re getting the absolute minimum service and backup support through using a middleman.0 -
Firstly as stated above packaging is paramount it needs to be well protected before sending out. Usually the box the goods come in is fine.fentigerfurniture wrote: »Hi,
Thanks for the reply. If you could recommend some please

This is the company I currently use for UK deliveries.
Freight 4 u they will collect either from you or your supplier. If collecting from supplier ask them if there is any discount for collection some companies will others will not.
For some other deliveries I have used Shiply, you can get some useful contacts from using their service.
Check round on the internet for furniture delivery companies, if you can find a local one near to you that's a better bet as it could be cheaper for you.
Ask other retailers who they are using, I don't send many and when I do they tend to be larger orders so not sure who to recommend for just odd small parcels.
Anyone else make any further recommendations for the OP?0 -
How large are your items ? Large enough to put on a pallet ? If so how about palletways0
