I got a sim only contract less than 2 weeks ago and applied for a cap1 secured credit card and got accepted.

Thanks... then maybe it's not hopeless! Did you get approved on the web or after receiving their letter?
The fun of waiting for something I don't even need!!! :rotfl:

Yes I know Citibank is in the UK, however it's not a UK bank. You can't as a UK citizen go in and apply for a current account, that's where the problem lies.

Once you have copies of your files you need to check that you are showing as being on the electoral roll and that any accounts are reporting correctly (lots of green zeros). Just to check generally that nothing is untoward, no late payment markers, no ID theft or financial associates that shouldn't be on your report etc.

Out of interest, is there a reason you haven't applied for a UK bank account yet?

The first paragraph is totally incorrect, anyone one can walk into/or apply online for a UK Citibank Account. It's true that they only have sort codes starting with 30- ( mostly associated with lloyds group)

So I got approved to get a card with Capital One!!!

What's the deal to improve my credit scoring? Should I always pay the card in full or should I pay the minimum in full and from time to time some interest?
  • Pay the card in full

After 7 months apply for a barclaycard initial

After 6 bills with initial call and ask to product change, after another 6 months call and ask for an APR reduction

    Always pay balance in full.

Citibank IS a real UK bank. Aqua don't recognise the 6 digit sort code for Citi because 99.9% of applicants bank with LLoyds, TSB, Barclays, Natwest etc

Also if you are citigold call your account manager. He might have a friend at Amex ;)

hope not!!! AMEX is the most useless card ever! At least in Australia no one accepts AMEX and if they do they ask for a huge transaction fees! Sure let me pay 3% to the merchant just so I can flash an Amex!
  • Doesn't happen like this here. Amex accepted at most major shops & fuel stations.

They have good rewards and other lenders like seeing customers with an amex on their credit file.*

    * I've seen other lenders scoring boards ;)
  • Also amex fraud team is fantastic as is customer service and the account statements always make sense :)

TBH I wouldn't expect them to be anymore. Citi have moved up. They had to.

10 years ago sub primers LOVED citi (here in the UK)

Now it's all about their wealth division.
