The gas engineer needs his !!!! kicking. HE should have ring 0800111999 and hung around to advise the Nat Grid people what he had done. I've always found them prompt and very helpful.

I'd rather 100 false alarms than one that puts lives at risk.

Keep us updated on the situation.

If you're not already sat in a crater that was once the street.

For some reason, many members of the public have an issue with reporting such matters. It is a common theme.

The above is the HSE report into an incident in which people died.

    Quoting from within the document..

    ******************************

    "Incident Summary

    1. In the early evening of Saturday the 21st. of October 2000 a resident of the Linfield Street area in Dundee noticed a smell, probably of natural gas, near 21 Linfield Street.

The smell continued to be noticed by various people up to the time of the incident the following morning; no one reported this either to the police or to Transco"

    *******************************

It costs nothing to ring and report. Had someone done so in the above incident, it is likely that lives could have been saved.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Aye it's something I've noticed with water as well, there was a pipe leaking near us for days (as it wasn't on my street I assumed one of the locals would have reported it), after about 4 days I rang up the water company who were appreciative of the information as no one had bothered to do it.

After that I've started ringing up the first time I see a leak (in the same way I would always do for gas), they're happy to have it reported even if they already know about it.

Much the same as damaged lamp posts, I've had to ring up a few times about them, and the local council have on a couple of occasions sent an emergency team out to seal them off until a replacement could be fitted (apparently having red wires with exposed copper sticking out of a broken hatch at dog piddling height is dangerous ;)).

IIRC it's a well known effect, basically everyone assumes someone else has done something about it, so they don't do anything.

Another possibility. Does your neighbour eat a lot of boiled eggs?
