    What happens is that the wiper tries to self park and jams for whatever reason; maybe snow build up in this case. Then the wiper motor has continual current trying to self park but the motor can't move so the windings just heat up until they start burning/melting. Happened on my Hyundai recently but just made a bad smell, it didn't catch fire. I had to take the tailgate apart and disconnect the motor as it was still live and hot even with the ignition turned off. (self-parking innovation ...bah)
