New home utility problem

I completed on my new home on Friday. The property had been empty for what I can gather for over a year. I spoke to the supplier of the gas and electricity to give readings. However there is a debt on the utility and they have said as I brought the property I am liable for the current debt which began last May!!! They claim I brought the debt to.

Has anybody else come across this? I have said I am only liable from date of completion any advice?

As far as I know, the debt would be against the previous owners, not against the property, so they're probably talking out of their back end, trying to recoup some money from you as unsuspecting buyer.

I'd say, unless something is specifically written into the purchase contract, they can go fly a kite and chase the previous owner(s) for the debt.

    They are talking rubbish.

Unless perhaps it is a leasehold property the utilities chages are included in the service charge ie the building has a communal hot water/heating system.

In that case I suspect you would inherit the debt.

Write to the supplier with a copy of your tr1 showing the Completion date and advise them any charges before that date are not yours.

    Send a LETTER.
  • Thanks for replies. I am going to send them a nice long letter tomorrow. Feeling a bit tired moving house so will write with a clear head. It is a freehold property so I did not think I was liable.

I'd be changing suppler ASAP after they tried duping you into paying someone else's debt.
