TV developing fault

Options
My son purchased a 48" Celcus 3d tv from Sainsburys in approx 2012/2013. Since purchase it has developed a number of faults, so I contacted Sainsburys and informed them.

Their reply is as follows:-

So we can fully consider the matter, please send us a copy of your receipt or proof of purchase. He cannot find the receipt Should your receipt not be available, we can accept a bank statement showing the amount paid for the television. He paid in cash If these are not available, please let us know how much you paid for the item and further detail on the date of purchase if possible. He doesnt know the date but knows roughly how much he paid for it

To help us identify this particular television on our records, we would be grateful if you could also reply with the full model number and size of the television. He can provide these

Do you think they would be able to trace date etc from the TV licensing form he had to fill out in store when he purchased the TV?

Possibly, but Sainsburys will be better able to tell you that than us. It sounds like they want to do their best to help.

It's doubtful, but always worth asking. Depends on how they keep the data, and even if they are still required to keep old records now that there is no legal requirement to take customer's details.

Possibly fighting a losing battle though. He doesn't have proof of purchase, doesn't know when he bought it, and doesn't know how much he paid for it?

Do Sainsburys know roughly how old the TV is? If they don't, then they may well ask you to get an independant report stating the fault(s) aren't down to wear and tear or user damage.

Did he withdraw the money from a bank account to pay it in cash? If so perhaps bank statement can narrow down the purchase date by providing the withdrawal date?
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
