I had someone do this to me today. If they had used their mirrors any time in the last 3 minutes they would have known known that I was the only car behind, so the pedestrian was only going to be waiting 10 seconds.

Instead we got this stupid thing of her waving the pedestrian across, but the pedestrian wasn't expecting anyone to do anything so daft, so didn't leave the pavement.

The consequences will be she will get to witness someone run over who walks across following her instruction and eventually it will dawn upon her, it was entirely her making .

I've told her not to continue as I am certain it is an offence under the road traffic act 'driving without due care and attention', but she says I am being ridiculous and there is no such offence so just does it even more now....ahhh!
No idea if its an offence but it is not good driving. Its ok to be courteous in slow moving traffic but stopping the flow of traffic just to be courteous is wrong. Its strange behavoiur that will annoy other drivers and could cause an accident. The fact she is now doing it more often despite a suggestion it is wrong is just stupid.
How long has she been driving?. Has she never wondered why other drivers don't drive like this?.

Stopping to encourage a pedestrian to cross the road at a place other than at an official pedestrian crossing can, and may get a 'serious fault' on a driving test...

The problem arises because the driver who thinks they are 'exercising courtesy', has no way of informing other road users of why they are 'stopping'......they are not 'controlling' all other road users.

They are, literally, expecting all other road users to 'understand' what it is they are doing....and this doesn't happen, nor should it be expected to happen. That is why there is a system of signals, to impart information to other road users.

The problem arises because drivers, on the whole...once they have passed their tests, then go on to presume they know all about driving, and the problems of driving.
They consider themselves to be 'reasonable', and 'expert'.

This observation is not meant to be derogatory in any way...it is a normal human condition.

The DSA, who set the standards expected of our driving, have done risk assessments of aspects of driving which have, in the past, created problems [accidents, etc]...and have developed procedures, [which are taught at every level of instruction] to reduce or eliminate the countless amounts of risk on the roads.

This is reflected in the changes to the syllabus for driver training at the various levels.

The OP's friend would benefit from further driver education....for which there are a multitude of courses.

BTW, I post as someone who works within the driver training industry.....
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

OI get so mad with her because this just isn't right and she will get hit up the back one of these days...

It's not good practice, but anyone running into the back of her will themselves be in trouble and probably committing an offence (Driving Without Due Care and Attention or Careless Driving).
