Sounds like a cowboy. ALWAYS check their Gas safe registration card. It has a photo on it and also always check the back of the card as it states specifically what the fitter is qualified to work on.
I have a gas safe card for domestic gas cooking appliances, but I can't work on boilers or gas fires, for example. The back of the card is important.
NEVER accept excuses like 'I'm waiting for a replacement in the post' or any other such nonsense.
If a repairer or fitter doesn't show a Gas safe card then don't let them anywhere near your gas appliance.0
