Buying before selling old property - Council Tax
Hi there, does anyone know what happens in this situation? Presumably for the few weeks while I'm renovating the old property and the mrs is at the new, we can get 25% single adult resident knocked off the council tax, but what about after that while it's trying to sell and I move down to the other property?
Any help appreciated.

My council web site says I have to phone in with queries. From google results, it looks like I could get stitched up with all the people who can actually afford two houses.Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. I wouldn't bother complicating things for the few weeks you are living separately in both properties, if it's only a few weeks it won't break the bank.
Some councils give discounts for unoccupied properties, others don't. It can make a difference if it is furnished or not sometimes as well so if you shift the furniture out you may have a better chance0 -
It seems that some councils are now charging 200% for empty properties.Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. Your statutory rights are not affected.0

In Scotland (E & W is 150%) but only for long term empty properties.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Umm, you can. You are one of those people. If you weren't, then this issue wouldn't be arising...ballisticbrian wrote: »it looks like I could get stitched up with all the people who can actually afford two houses.0 -
No - I have to move all my carp out so it can be decorated prior to selling. So I'm renting. Years of buying at car boot sales has taken it's toll. Then after that, take the money from the eventual sale and buy a different property.Umm, you can. You are one of those people. But the title of your thread and the opening line of your post doesn't say this - it refers to *buying before selling*

Sorry - I'm completely suffering from stress of the whole thing, haven't moved house for most of my life. How does anyone survive this?Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. Paint finger nails with strong mustard, won't stop you biting them but will take you mind of the perceived idea that its all gone wrong, you will be homeless and bankrupt.0
