Motorway / Cross country Car

Hi All,

I've been pondering over buying an XC90 for a while now. I do a mixture of motorway / town (A & B Roads) driving for my job and I'd like something a little bigger than my Passat. My job means I can be motorway / city based one day, but rural and countryside the next.

The XC90 seems to tick most of the boxes, automatic, diesel and higher up than my current car. I was wondering what other cars people are using for similar types of driving? My budget is around £6000-7000 - I don't buy brand new or like to lease.

Thanks in advance!

What do you mean by cross country?

Are you going to be using roads?

It would depend on your driving style and how you attack the bendy bits.

Personally, I would find the XC90 too slow and too wallowy as my main car (have test driven one) and it has an awful throttle response.

I do similar, lots of motorway, lots of A and B roads.

I currently use a BMW 530D which drives great and has enough power to get past those pesky tractors and trucks in rural settings.

My choices for that kind of driving would be an X5. Tight fit into your budget.

One of my concerns was the wallowing / slow response. My dad drives a Discovery and for what he needs, great, but for what I'd need I'd hate it :)

I had a 525d which was quite nippy and surprising on the fuel too. I suppose I could look at an Allroad or similar. I'd have liked a higher driving position but that isn't always easy to find. I'll take a look at the X5 too.
