Ball park figures for doing up rooms?

Some of you may know my partner and I are on the lookout for our first home.
We have may found one that has great potential, but most rooms all need a bit of modernising.
Apart from carpets and paint in living rooms etc, there a couple rooms that we would want to address pretty much right away.
- Bathroom - Very dated, would like to lift the carpet, tile the floor and walls to make it more modern...also change the bath and shower, and add a splash water guard onto the bath for the shower... what sort of money would I expect to pay for that, for parts and labour?
Also the kitchen floor tiles would be another, would like to change those ideally. Everything we can live with and change as and when we could afford. Neither rooms are huge, so hopefully it wouldnt cost a lot.
But just wanted to gauge opinions on how much you think this should cost, if we were to decorate it tastefully, yet strive to shop in a savvy way?

You really need to consider what else needs doing, first. Something that has 'potential' also comes with 'problems'.
The boiler may not provide the pressure or level of hot water that you want. The electrics could be outdated and you'll need a new fuse-board or even a rewire when the electrician turns up to put in downlighters or a decent extractor. The plaster could come off the walls when you remove existing tiles. There could be rot in floorboards or joists if the bath has leaked over a period of time. That's just the things associated with a bathroom.
You need to know the true state of the room. Renovating is not all about kitchens and bathrooms.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Try this thread, where people have put their quotes up for work:

Also this website:

And have a look at the prices of the items you are looking to buy (tiles etc) in the shops.
And I agree with Doozergirl - it's easy to plan a straightforward little job in theory, but your house/flat may not co-operate!0 -
Cheers, both good points0
