If you've got a British passport, and no complications such as criminal records etc, you should be able to apply online for ESTA - this link covers everything you need to know:

I think the "visa" if you're going from the UK is waived unless any member of your party has criminal convictions for certain offences, you will all however require an ESTA, which last I heard was $12 a piece. (Possibly gone up by now.) That's a simple online form, fill it in confirming that you have no convictions & you'll usually get a swift response from that, when I used the system in 2009 I had a reply within the hour.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0

The majority of people can travel to the USA on the Visa Waiver programme. You can apply on line and it costs 14$ per person.

In certain circumstances i.e convictions you will need to apply to the American Embassy for a Visa, sorry don't know how much or how long it would take.0 -

Ensure you use this site, others will charge you to complete a simple form.
Don't pay more than $14 and that's valid for a 2 year period.0 -

Or until your passport runs out, if that is sooner.0 -

Nothing to do with where you are going from but what your nationality is. If you are a Cuban or Iranian living here you certainly dont get to simply enter on an ESTA0 -
Yeh when we went to the states, we just did an ESTA and that is it.0

Many thank for quick replies. Sounds a lot better than the £84/86 quoted by one agent!!!Now found the site about New York with 7500+ replies and will be spending some time going through the very helpful information from what are obviously more seasoned travellers than me.0

Now just make sure you click on the official link to apply for your ESTA and only pay the correct amount - currently USD14. Lots of scam sites to watch out for.0
