House next door being bought for social housing

I assume from the OP that they were living there when you bought the property?
This is why I always say you should do your research before buying. Whenever looking to buy, I would always visit the neighbours on both sides to as some stupid questions such as
We are thinking of buying next door.....could you tell me what the parking is like around here....what are the schools like......does this road get a lot of traffic at weekends...
I already would know the answers, but just want to 'size up' the neighbours... are they friendly, do they invite you in.....are they abrupt/off hand...... do they say that they are pleased the ar88holes next door are moving......does their house look like a tip.....
This is not foolproof, but it may have had warning bells ringing for the OP before they signed on the contract.
You can also go one step further and visit each next door but one neighbour and ask about the actual next door neighbour! Again, if the OP had done this she would not be living there now...
Research, research, and more research....20 plus years as a mortgage adviser for Halifax (have now retired), and I have pretty much seen it all....:D0 -
You're absolutely right, I should've done more research. To be honest nobody was living there when I bought it, but I did have reservations about it from the state it was in. The houses behind (with them being back to back houses) all look in great condition and well cared for, but I should've asked about and tried to find out more about that one. I suppose my biggest problem is that I'm too shy to ask, but I'll know better next time and perhaps recruit a friend to do the asking! It's a pretty big deal buying a house, I know that... lesson learnt :embarasse
So anyway, I got a completely bizarre e-mail about an hour ago from the company currently renting it stating that their previous e-mail was wrong and they in fact aren't buying the property. I don't know if this is correct, but hopefully it is and I can put the worry out of my mind! That said, you never know what you're going to get as far as neighbours are concerned anyway... could be some other noisy person living there I suppose, perhaps even worse. But fingers crossed I'll get lucky this time. So it's a weird feeling of semi- or partial relief right now, but I'm still not sure what to make of it all. I texted the guy who lives behind that property and he was very happy. Unlike me he has lived there for 8 years and done his place up exactly how he wanted it, so the past however many months the house behind has been rented out have not been fun for him at all. But hopefully now things are looking up and I can get back to moving things in :j Sorry to have wasted people's time, but thank you all for the advice and for making me feel better about things. I was in a very bad way after I found out, by way of understatement!0 -
