New job before new build is released?

Hi everyone,

My partner and I are currently waiting for a plot to be released for a new build home, we have signed an early bird reservation but haven't put a reservation fee down as plot is still yet to be released.
We've been waiting since September last year as the compound on site is still where our house will be built. We will be using help to buy, and have been given a guide price for the house of 200k.

I've been invited to an interview for a better paid job within the NHS, the same sector that I work in now, however the job is based within a hospital. The salary is banded and 4k more per year than my current salary.

My main concern is, is this a bad idea even contemplating this with the imminent release of the plot any month now? I know they'll want us to exchange contracts within 28 days etc. Should I hold off and wait until we're settled into the house to look to progress in my career?

Thanks for reading!

  • Hmm, can't see why you would want to hold off the job as it appears to be a good move for you. Can you explain more about why you are concerned?

How does it work with NHS jobs? Is your employer currently the NHS and with this new job it's like a promotion within the NHS?

Will you be able to commute from where you live now and from your future house ?

You might not get offered the job, you might not get the house.

You may have registered interest in the house but that doesn't mean that you will end up buying, anything could happen:

-Will you still want it when it becomes available? - you might change your mind
    - There may be complications with the sale and you might not exchange

There are all sorts of things that could happen - not that I'm trying to put a dampener on buying a house but things aren't always straight forward.

I would take whatever comes first - if you get offered a job take it. If you don't then buy the house. Or get the job and then buy the house.

If you decide to hold off for the house and something goes wrong you will kick yourself for not going to the interview.

The only issue I can see is if that you swap employers - that is not clear from your post. Usually you have to supply at least 3 wage slips when applying for a mortgage. So maybe you won't have enough if you change employer now, but then again the house might not get released for another few months - you never know. Delays are always possible.
