  • As mentioned earlier, stick to private sales only. As an car trade person once confided to me 'a £2000 forecourt car is a £1000 private car with a pro valet'.

    In this sort of budget, the right car is key. Whatever savings you make on other motoring costs could be trashed by unreliablity.

    Nothing is a given down this end of the used market, but if I may make a suggestion, and the assumption you're not bothered what you drive, then buy Japanese, and petrol. A Toyota Corolla or early Yaris might be within budget.
