removing damp smell

DAK or have any advice on how to remove a damp smell??

Long story short we had a leak above our chimney breast for 2-3 mths. Leak located and stopped. All windows, doors and some florr boareds open to allow it to dry out - but that damp smell still exists - although not as bad as when it was really wet before.

any advice on how to clear it welcome..

thanks

Good morning: Have you considered this possibility....your property might have dry rot? We experienced the nasty critter once in a renovation project but sorted it out ourselves.

Take a look here for further info. http://www.safeguardeurope.com/pdf_datasheets/dry_rot_book.pdf

    I'd get a de-humidifier too.

if you had the leak for 3 months it is gonna take at least that long for everything to dry out......

or as mentioned it may have developed into dry rot

just a thought, is this on the ground floor.... ie are you able to lift the floorboards and se whether there is a pile up of muck/dust/rubble under the floorboards..... block airways under the floor boards wouldnt help the issue
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

leak was on 1st floor over the chimney stack. so most water was in brick work. got the floor boards up and old flue stack open etc to allow good air circulation through it.
  • it occurs to me with the weather we've been having it could take even longer to fully dry out...

fingers crossed for you that its not rot.
