You have to stop the rats getting inside your house.

OP, your statement "I have learned that it has been this way for 4+ years " leads me to believe that you have moved into your property recently.

If that's the case, why did you choose to move next to such a place?

Is this something like a person moving to next to a railway line and then complaining about the noise of the trains?

Spiders this year have been particularly bad....I have had more than usual but our house backs onto a wooded revine...My daughter lives in a semi...surrounded by very neat gardens and you should see the whoppers she has had on a daily basis....we have tiddlers compared to her..Spiders are everywhere, they don't discriminate between neat or tidy...

Your immediate problem is the rats...you have most probably got them living inside your walls....I would go down the council offices armed with pictures of the garden and any snap shots you can manage to get of the rats inside your property and push them until they send someone round to investigate next doors garden properly...
For the first time in 10 years of living in our house we had a big mouse problem a few months ago....we tried humane traps but there was to many of them....in the end we put poison down and the problem disappeared within a couple of days...
My husband searched high and low for any bodies and didn't find one...but no smell either...

It was not as bad as it is now. She was still living there when I moved in and sometimes saw her at the back trimming the area immediately in front of her kitchen area.

From my understanding they kept getting complaints every year. She did what she could but let everything else as it was. Now she has left it has all gone crazy.

Obviously I wouldn't have moved there if I knew about the issues I describe here today. It would be ridiculous for me to have to move for something the council should at-least be looking into.

They have a history of acting upon other homeowners with gardens/ properties not as bad as my neighbours so that is why I don't understand why no proper action has been taken.

I understand what you said about the spiders as I occasionally saw some at my previous property. I cannot however discount the fact the the overgrown garden is a perfect habitat for them :/

Yes, I can confirm that they are indeed inside our walls as we frequently hear them at night. I wanted to use poison after seeing them constantly ignore our other traps but I am still afraid that they could die in a hard to access place in the property. The stench would be unbearable :(

I will try your suggestion of paying the council a visit!

If it bothered me that much I would simply take a bush cutter then a strimmer to it and level it. Yes, I know it's not the OP's responsibility but at the end of the day a few hours work solves a problem that might never get solved.

The council cant do anything so your on your own, deal with it, it's you it's hurting no one else.

Put down a 'snap' rat trap in the kitchen overnight, baited with some food.

When I called the council they warned me against that as it would be illegal.

How is it hurting just me? It affects the entire neighbourhood and makes it look bad too. The neighbours next door to her also have this issue with the rats.

That's what I use. The rats ignore them now. I will try the sticky traps.

I mentioned it when I contacted the council but nothing :(

You need to report it to the relevant department. You may have spoken to someone who knew nothing about the scheme.

You can use the online form on the link I gave.

The council may call it illegal, but I call it neighbourly. Go and see the poor old girl and ask her permission.
