Hi All
I'm planning a trip to the Naples/Sorrento area later in the year and would like some help with hotels.
I won't be hiring a car so need somewhere with good transport links to all the major attractions - Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Capri etc.
An added issue is that I need a room with three single beds (as we will be three adults travelling together).
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Roberta

Robeta,
We stayed in Sorrento a few years back. Bus from Naples to Sorrento, and the Hydrofoil / taxi back was very easy.
We jumped on the train to get to Pompeii, and Vesuvius - it was a bit tricky in a "we're foreigners and don't really know what we're doing" kind of way, but we got there.
I think Herculaneum is just a bit further round on the train. Can't help with Capri, or any single bedded hotels.

Sorrento is a much nicer base and has links to all the places mentioned. the train is called the Circumvesuviana and will take you to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius. There is a fast boat to Capri. Some hotels in Sorrento are up on the hill but have shuttle buses down to the town and back.0

If you're on a budget Piano di Sorrento is a little cheaper than Sorrento, it's an easy stroll into town and still on the circumvesuviana.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

I'd agree that staying in Sorrento you can get to all the places you mention by public transport. We also took a bus ride along the Amalfi coast to Positano and came back by boat which was great.

We stayed at this hotel. It's a bit quirky and up a hill out of town on a busy junction. We had a cheap, half board deal with Thomson or Thomas Cook (can't remember which) and were more than satisfied. It's not palatial but perfectly adequate. I remember the rooms being large so it might be worth checking if they'll take 3 adults.
If you're at all infirm then stick to Sorrento itself although the prices may be higher. We tended to walk down the hill and catch a bus back.0 -
Vico Equense was nice 30-odd years ago and from what I can see online, still is today. Convenient for sightseeing at Pompeii but much quieter than Naples or Sorrento, and not so expensive and exclusive as Positano or Amalfi coast.
