Annual travel insurance - when to take out new policy

Hi folks - last year I bought annual travel insurance in April. I have just booked a holiday for May this year. This is obviously not covered by last year's insurance, but the question is when to take out a new policy (Martin always to sort insurance straight after booking hols!). If I wait until the previous one expires and something happens in the meantime that affects my May holiday, then I won't be covered. But if I renew now then I'm cutting off a few months of my current policy.
Do I just take the hit and renew now?
Apologies if this isn't the correct place to post this, I wasn't sure if it should go under insurance or holidays!

Last year's policy will cover you against cancellation up to the renewal date of the policy
Whether you take out a new policy or renew your existing one you will have to make all your health declarations again. So any new conditions that have developed since your last declaration will have to be made whatever you do.
So you may as well leave sorting this till your renewal is due then shop round for the best deal.0 -
Thanks for the quick reply. So even though my travel dates are after the existing policy I'm still covered? That's good news, I'll wait and renew (well more than likely be new policy rather than direct renewal) in April :-)0

In my experience you have to inform the insurer of any changes as they happen through the year as well.0 -
looking to hijack this thread for some advice on Annual Travel Insurance
Looking at getting a policy, just a couple of points
are you covered if and when you travel on your own, e.g. daughter going with friends to Majorca or me going on a football trip ???
also my daughter turns 18 in April, how will this effect the policy under a family policy ???
