My dd is 9 and has asd.

I put her into group swimming lessons 2 years ago as a complete non swimmer.
I pay £25 a month. Her disability living allowance covers this.

She swims fantastically! Out of the pool she is very clumsy and uncoordinated but in the water she is like a fish.

He's 8. He's swimming and enjoying it. So long as he enjoys it then I'd leave it at that. He doesn't need any help with doing it differently. Swimming underwater is more fun, imho. He's probably enjoying the way sounds change under there - and feeling the water all round. Magical.

    Butt out .... he's a kid.

    Encouraging post

    Until the butt out bit.

Seriously? Its not necessary to be rude.

I would not worry he is only eight. I understand your frustration you want your child to be able to swim. I wish mine could been going to lessons for ages hes just not getting it his problem is he can't focused long enough to listen to instructions and carry them out.

Have you thought of something like this http://theswimmingshop.com/swimfin-blue.html?gclid=CLj1w5mNxMMCFfQZtAodsXoAdg#fo_c=464&fo_k=4051b3b584b3ed7404481b33b44eccb9&fo_s=gplauk

They have them at my ds swimming club and all the kids love them. wearing something like this on his back would make it harder for him to be able to swim under the water.

Why have you let him get to age 8yrs without learning how to swim??
    Bit late!

that is a bit harsh. My ds is 7 nearly 8, he wont be able to swim by 8 BUT he has been going to lessons since he was 5!

It is never too late to learn to swim, you can learn at any age.

My son has ASD and loves being in the water. He also loves being under the water. He prefers to swim with his face in the water.... And that's how he has been taught.
I think at 8 he is still young. Just take him to the pool as much as you can afford to and just let him play in the water..... Skills are a long way off when you're just 8. His core strength will come from just playing around in the pool, and watching others. My son learnt alot from just watching others swimming, and how they looked in the water. ASD peeps gain alot from visual learning.... Sometimes an instructor instructing can be very confusing if they don't know what they are on about!

8 is old to learn to swim? I've just learned (well still learning) and I'm not going to see 60 again.
