    If he's saying the fence is all yours, you could do the neighbourly thing and ask him whether he would prefer pink or purple when you put up your new fence :D Might make him reconsider.

    I can't say that's the case in any of the neighbourhoods I've lived in, and that's quite a few!

    Why would you spend a small fortune on fencing and give your neighbours the best view of it? They're getting a fence, that should be enough.

    When our estate was built, in the early seventies, gardens were separated by wooden stakes supporting two lengths of wire. Any fences added were, of course , the property of the households that had them installed, so no left- or right-hand rules.
