I have had an RAC breakdown cover policy for 2 years which I now want to cancel
As it is due for renewal Mid Feb I carefully read the renewal letter and discovered I am on Automatic renewal If I do not cancel they will take the money from my Credit card
When I phoned them more than 5 times in 5 days on their 0844 number which has now cost me more than £2.50 I can never get thru even though I have waited for more than 15 mins most times
I have now sent the RAC an email and also emailed my credit card co to advise them I wait with baited breath...
Is it actually possible to leave this UNSCRUPULOUS COMPANY at renewal or do they make it as difficult as possible???

By the way they put my premium up from £105 last year to £153 this year but tell me I have a £6 discount Green flag are quoting £84 for better cover for 2 cars

Why not ring the new memberships line, I'm sure you will get through to someone fast.

You could ask the bank to block the transaction, I am not sure if they can do that or not but maybe easier to contact them?

Or you could cancel the credit card and get a new one maybe? Again I am not certain if this would stop this kind of transaction but ask your bank.

Then just write to the RAC explaining you want to cancel. Have you tried emailing?

  • When signing up to the AA or RAC, I always pay by direct debit as it's easy to cancel, CPA's are a lot more hassle to cancel.

Send them a letter as well, and make sure you get a certificate of posting.

not that hard to cancel a cpa..

ring the bank and tell them to cancel it.. they must cancel it there and then.. and if any further payments come from the card the bank has to refund them

Exactly this. You might need to escalate to a supervisor or manager though ... lots of the front line staff still believe that only the recipient company can cancel a CPA - even though the rules changed several years ago!

    I think that's the OP's problem:
When I phoned them more than 5 times in 5 days on their 0844 number which has now cost me more than £2.50 I can never get thru even though I have waited for more than 15 mins most times

Very annoying that you have to pay to speak to them if you want to cancel, as it is in their interests to keep you waiting as long as possible while the meter ticks away and they make more money out of you. As has been said above, a New Business number might get answered more quickly.

It's not the OP's problem at all, because the advice given is to cancel the CPA with the bank. Best to read and understand the thread before replying.

My mistake. Thank you for pointing it out, sarcasm unnecessary. :)
