  • Would you say that he is a naive sort of person? Is he definitely in his right mind and a healthy state?

He is in a healthy state and of sound mind! He has been a family friend for 18 years now and I think he would love to have had a family like we have.He was brought up thru the care system until the age of 10 where he was adopted and even though he is in his late 30`s he still lives with his adoptive mum.His adoptive family have always had money,he hasnt "wanted" for anything (financially at least) and has always been the person at the bar or restaurant paying everyones bill.He has always said that he never knew who wer his real friends and who just wanted to get their drink paid! Maybe he feels like we are the closest thing to brothers and sisters that he has ever had...i really dont know.

You need to pay top dollar for a survey and for a valuation. You need the sharpest solicitor you can buy to point out all the perils and pitfalls and to draw up nuclear proof documentation.
You will always be in this man's thrall, even when you've paid off the mortgage/loan. There's something off kilter about his offer, I have no idea what it might be.

Not necessarily. Sometimes people are just very nice and want to help.

This sounds like for whatever reason he feels compelled to buy friendship. Does he feel he has to buy yours as well?

  • Yes, perhaps his social skills and understanding are not what they could be.

Something about this doesn't sound right to me. You need to stop and ask yourself whether it is right to exploit this persons generosity. And what might happen if suddenly his mother decided it's time he left the nest. It's not normal behaviour to pay everyone's bill, and if I'm being honest, a true friend would (usually) decline and perhaps even be somewhat offended.
