No i dont mind you asking at all,the clutch has started to slip around 2 weeks ago only in 5th gear at the present time but is definatley on its way out so needs doing nothing i can do to prevent it going i dont drive the car hard or slip the clutch i presume its still the original and i dont know what kind of life the car had before i had it,as for the brake pipes i have had the car on the ramp as had a sever knocking noise (wich has been sorted) and while it was on the ramp iv obviously had a good look round and noticed tht the rear brake pipes have started to corrode according to the 2 mot testers they would just be a pass and advise for the mot but i would rather get them done for peace of mind, like you suggested they had been coated in grease wich imo just hides problems so was only found once id wiped the grease off.The front brake pipes have been replaced with copper but the rears have obviously been left (this had been done before i got the car).
I try and get my car on the ramp as much as possible but its very hard when a normal working day is 8am untill 7pm then an hours travel each way.i also work long hours on saturday.i dont have access to work on sundays.so to get the bits of work done i will have to start one night and stay very late and come in early the next morning to finish off.at the end of the day i need my car to be 100% as its what gets me to work to earn money for me to pay my mortage and live ect.

But also as you say the brake pipes will cost me pence but the clutch and flywheel will be around 3-400 pounds and my starter motor also went this morning so that will be another 100+ Pounds

Surely though that is much cheaper (potentially a quarter if my maths doesn't fail me) cost than 2,000 pounds for a car that could potentially need the same or even more work doing to it?

Even if you bought a car with no faults you're still 1,500 quids in if your Astra is back up to scratch instead.

A £2000 car will almost certainly have these wear and tear issues that will surface shortly after ownership. You could easily spend the same amount on your new [used] car. My brother bought a saab for £4000. He had to buy a new battery, change pads & discs, buy some rail things for diesel engines etc.

Car owners tend to lose love for their car before selling, they'll put off these services because they know at some point in future they'll look to sell. Often a car is sold precisely because there are work that needs doing to them which you might not be able to identify on viewing.

e.g. car burns oil, ac system completely dead and needs repair (you can't tell in winter), car has leaky heater matrix, mechanical fault with alignment from sideswipe (tracking can't fix as it's frame damage) etc.

Sounds like a plan - I commute most days in a car the same age as yours but with 175,000 miles on the clock (Audi A6 allroad).
