    Film is the smart way to do this, but if you really want a permanent frosting and accepting that the window will be weakened by it, then instead of sandblasting you could do it more gently by hand.

    Get a piece of rubber (old hot water bottle?) and attach *brass* washers with suitable glue (brass will not scratch the glass). Then get some very fine pumice powder, and use a light sprinkling and rub it in little circles with enough water, and bigger circles to get it even. Takes a bit of work, but it's how top-quality aerospace engineering glass is frosted with least damage to the panel.

    Our front door has what I assume is sandblasted glass but there's a line about 5mm wide just inside the edge that is clear. If they can do that, I don't see why half/half would be a problem!
