Flight Cancellation USA

Hello,

I know you're maybe entitled to compensation if your EU flight is delayed but what is the story if a flight leaving from America to the UK via the EU is cancelled due to bad weather?

I've just returned from NYC where our flight was cancelled and we had to stay an extra 2 days before we could get a flight home.

    which airline?
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

EU compensation applies if you are delayed on an EU carrier only if departing from outside the EU to the EU
EU compensation does not apply where the delay is outside the control of the airline - such as weather
If you were on an EU airline you should be provided with accommodation/meals under duty of care
For anything else speak to your travel insurance

I'd say a cancellation because of weather would mean a claim from travel insurance.

I was envisaging that myself on Thursday, when Manchester airport was closed. However, U.S. Airways came up with another plane and got us home.

you need to be more specific, these are 2 separate airlines, 1 is an EU airline, the other is non-EU
You need to know the "operating airline" rather than the one that may be the flight number
If the operating airline was Air France you would be due reimbursement of accommodation/meals under duty of care (if these were not provided). No compensation
If the operating airline was Delta you would be due nothing
  • I think that acts of weather count differently, especially as your flight was cancelled and you were moved onto another flight, rather than the original flight being actually delayed. When the volcano eruption caused our flight be cancelled 5 years ago we spent an extra week in Vegas and Virgin paid us back our expenses (hotel and the reciepts for meals that we had kept). We didn't get any compensation though, but luckily both of our employers were understanding and allowed us the extra time off, so we weren't out of pocket.
