Buying an older smart phone.

I have used PAYG phones for a considerable time and generally they have proved adequate.
I am now considering purchasing an Apple 4s as there are one or two reasonable offers about.
As this is an older model, which retailers obviously want to 'shift', am I likely to encounter any problems with updates etc?
It appears to operate on iOS7 which I suspect is no longer supported.
If anyone can advise on the pitfalls, if any, on buying an older phone I'd pleased to hear from you.
Many thanks,
Fortescue.

The iPhone 4S will run the latest iOS8 no problems. Its still a pretty good phone, and repairs are cheaper if you drop it.
I think you'll be pretty pleased with it.

Many thanks for that. I can proceed with confidence now. Ta!0 -
If you get one - update it to IOS8 straight away. The upgrade uses all the storage capacity of the 8Gb version. You get the space back after the upgrade of course. It is still a very good phone - good luck.0

Thanks for that. I take it that the best way to update would be via my home wifi network rather than the phone's own internet connection?
Hope that makes sense but never having had a smartphone I'm not 100% sure how to proceed.0 -
I'm not a fan of iOS 8. It made my ipad 2 run like a dog and frankly I'm seriously considering getting rid of it for this reason - it just doesn't seem to play well with the older hardware. I'd recommend getting a phone with iOS 7 and sticking with it.0

+1 I wouldn't consider loading iOS8 onto my iPhone 4s0

I have found that older Android phones work quite well (usual phone functionality), but sometimes fall over when trying to play the latest games0
